Why was the site set up?
I found that I spent much of my training and first year as a teacher creating and searching for resources, hence the site aims to save other teachers (particularly trainees, NQTs and those changing year groups) the time and effort of doing this.
Who is the site for?
Following on from why the site was set-up, I envisage it being particularly useful for trainee teachers, NQTs and those changing year groups in England. However, of course all types of teachers from around the world are more than welcome to use it, as well as parents, tutors and anyone else who will find it useful.
How do I match the plans to the resources / what does it mean if there is (or isn’t) a code before a resource e.g. A1001?
Some of the planning documents have a code in the learning objective column e.g. A1001. If you want to find the resources that go with that lesson plan, their file names will all begin with that code. If there is no code at the start of the file name then there is not currently a lesson plan to go with it.
What are the positive features of the site?
- free of charge
- easy and fast to navigate and search
- a simple no-frills layout
-
file names that unambiguously tell you what the file contains without you needing to open the file to find out, and make it easy to search for what you want
- links to other sites, with clear explanations that tell you exactly what the linked site is particularly useful for
- documents and a site that can be accessed and navigated from any operating system or with any software
- resources that are photocopiable
- worksheets that have answers (unless they are very easy questions or difficult to provide answers for because they are open-ended)
What does the site aim to help you do less of?
- searching through textbooks / online for resources
- spending money on (usually rip-off priced) textbooks
- being asked to pay to access resources on-line, which you then find out are rubbish / not what you wanted
- seeing what you want in a textbook, going to photocopy it and then realising it needs to be in colour for the kids to be able to answer the questions
- having to open files or links to find out exactly what they contain
What will you find on the site?
- Worksheets (with answer sheets unless the work is very easy / difficult to provide answers for e.g. open comprehension questions)
- Success criteria
- Assessments
- Prompt sheets e.g. writing frames
- Links to other useful sites (with descriptions of what they are useful for)
- Planning
- Other bits and pieces
What are the resources based on?
The resources are based on the Primary Framework for numeracy and literacy, and the QCA schemes of work, used in English Primary Schools. The resources were designed for a year 3 (age 7 – 8 years old) class in England. (It should be noted that the children in this year 3 class are of a higher ability than most year 3 classes would be). However, I hope many of them can be used in other year groups and / or in other countries.
How do I get in contact with the site owner?
If you feel there is a way that the site could be improved, you spot any mistakes, or you want to get in touch for any other reason, then please do so by emailing clicking on the ‘contact us’ button and completing the form. I can’t promise to reply to your email but will endeavour to do so when I have time.
Finally I would like to say thank you to:
- Freshtroop for creating the website
- The other teachers and teaching assistants who have provided resources, ideas and feedback for the site
- The children I teach for showing me what works, what doesn’t and how things can be improved
